Biomedical Scholars Association
The BSA is a tri-school graduate student group committed to supporting students of color academically, socially, and professionally. One core BSA value is to create meaningful change both within and outside of the Johns Hopkins community. Our members believe in actively serving our immediate community through volunteerism.
The BSA has an on-going science mentorship program called the Junior Biomedical Scholars Mentorship Program (JBS). Every Saturday, Hopkins graduate students help Dunbar High School students design health-related research projects and prepare them for local and national science competitions. The program has both summer and academic school year cycles. The BSA also organizes one volunteer event per month. This year we volunteered at Bluford Drew Jemison School (September), the Maryland Food Bank (October), and sponsored a holiday toy drive (November). On Dec 22nd, we volunteered at Moveable Feast to help East Baltimore residents going through difficult times this holiday season.
I am pleased that we always have a core group of volunteers at every service event. However, I would like to see new faces in addition to the familiar ones. Currently, no faculty members have participated in any BSA volunteer events. I think the most important thing is to get the word out that we are not just volunteering but making meaningful change in the lives of others. In the future, the BSA plans to send out newsletters highlighting past and list future service projects by month. We also plan to work more closely with SOURCE to advertise service events and recruit students in all 3 schools.
I am the Programming Vice President of the BSA. I coordinate and oversee our academic, professional development, and mentorship programs. The East Baltimore community has contributed greatly to the rich legacy of Johns Hopkins. Recognizing this fact, I think it is our responsibility as students and future leaders to ensure the relationship is reciprocal. BSA members share this belief and want to make a positive and lasting impact on the residents of East Baltimore. I hope our programs continue upon our graduation and for years to come! - Khadijah
