Shutdown at JHMI

On July 19, 2001, the U.S. Office of Human Research Protection (OHRP)
ordered a suspension of about 2,400 federally funded human research
studies at Hopkins, approximately 110 of which were at the School.
The extensive review of human studies at Hopkins was prompted by
the tragic June 2 death of a healthy volunteer at the Bayview Research
Campus.

A Cascade of Honors

It's been a heady summer for Dean Alfred Sommer and the School.
On May 6, it was announced that an anonymous donor had pledged
$100 million to the School to fund a 10-year initiative to rid
the world of malaria. Topping off the month of May, Sommer was
elected to the National Academy of Sciences (NAS), the nation's
most distinguished scientific organization.

Herb Hansen's Adventure

In June, Herb Hansen Jr., senior associate dean for finance
and administration, was scheduled to ride along with a Baltimore
City police officer on a Friday night from 4 p.m. to midnight.
The week before the ride-along, to gain an appreciation of the
difficulties officers face, he reported to the Police Academy
for weapons training, where he was put through "the mother
of all video games."

They Said It at the School

"Scientists get indignant when we ask them about conflict
of interest but 98 percent of studies funded by the drug's maker
finds the drug works; 76 percent of studies performed by neutral
researchers find the drug works."
"The IV fluid was killing people through septicemia, but its manufacturer
had convinced the U.S. there'd be a shortage of fluid if such
a recall were carried out. So, instead of pulling the product
off the market, the government merely issued a warning to
physicians, in effect: 'Stop using the IV fluid if a patient
gets sick.' "
