Moyses Szklo, MD, DrPH, MPH, professor in the Bloomberg School’s Department of Epidemiology, was awarded the Physician's Merit Medal from the Brazilian President, José Lula da Silva. Szklo was presented with the medal by the Health Minister, Dr. Jose Gomes Temporao, at a ceremony in Brazília, Brazil, in November. Created by a 1950 law, induction into the Physician's Merit Order honors physicians who provide outstanding service in public health or medicine.

A native of Brazil, Szklo has been a part of the Johns Hopkins faculty since 1975, where he has studied the natural history and the etiology of cardiovascular diseases. Szklo was principal investigator of the Johns Hopkins field centers of two of the largest cohort studies of subclinical and clinical atherosclerosis: the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study, for which he was also chairman of its Steering Committee from 1986 through 2000, in addition to acting as its editor for internal review of manuscripts; and the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis from 2000 through 2008, for which he is currently chair of its publications committee. He is also editor-in-chief of the American Journal of Epidemiology.

Szklo earned his medical degree from the State University of Rio de Janeiro, and both his master of public health and doctorate degrees from the Bloomberg School.
