School Forms New Department of Behavior and Health
In May, the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health announced it is establishing a new department to study human behavior and health. The new department will be dedicated to a multi-disciplinary approach to identify why people behave the way they do and how to most effectively change these behaviors to dramatically improve health.

Gates Foundation Donates $40 Million to School
The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has committed $40 million to the School to support family planning and reproductive health initiatives in developing nations, where unintended pregnancies and unsafe childbearing are a major cause of illness and death.

SARS Emerges as New Public Health Threat
Within a few short months, SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) has erupted into a global public health crisis. On May 14, the dean convened a conference at the School to examine the SARS epidemic.

School Assists Iraqi Relief Efforts 
As part of the School’s Minority Summer Internship Program, 21 high school students and eight undergraduate students came to the School this summer to work with the faculty and staff. The students, who came from across the country, were placed with faculty mentors and assisted in research laboratories and applied public health research.

Tips for Using Alternative Transportation
Air pollution and climate change are two of the greatest environmental detriments to public health. Transportation is a major contributor to both. The choices that each of us makes about how to get to work or school impact the quality of the air in Baltimore and the quantity of greenhouse gases released that contribute to global climate change.
