February 25, 2009 Symposium: The Promises and Pitfalls of Pharmacogenetics in Psychiatry This symposium will be held on February 25, 2009 from 1:00 - 6:00 pm in the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Recent advances in the field of pharmacogenetics may provide new insights into how and why individuals vary in their response to medications, heralding an era of “individualized” psycho-pharmacotherapy. The symposium will bring together leaders in this burgeoning field to discuss the progress that has been made in our understanding of the genetic basis of medication responses in patients with serious mental illness, how genomic approaches may be utilized to address the many research questions that remain, and ethical considerations in taking advantage of genetic information to improve treatment. Interested faculty, students, and researchers will be invited to attend free of charge (registration required). The day after the symposium the panel of presenters will join our research team to consult on opportunities for advancing pharmacogenetic research in the CMHI studies.
