Mission: The mission of the Center for Mental Health Initiatives is to improve the lives of persons with mental illness by fostering the collaboration of researchers and clinicians and by providing leadership in the implementation of public mental health initiatives. 

The Center includes faculty investigators and associates involved in research, teaching, and providing health care services in Baltimore and worldwide. Center affiliates include researchers and clinicians from the Departments of Mental Health and International Health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Department of Psychiatry at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and the Community Psychiatry Programs at the Johns Hopkins Hospital and the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center.

Through collaborative research the Center aims to:

• Improve the physical health of persons with severe mental illness
• Define a metric of recovery from an episode of severe mental illness
• Assess recovery from an episode of severe mental illness using a longitudinal cohort
• Search for genetic predictors of medical outcomes, recovery, and pernicious side effects of psychiatric medications
• Lower the disabilities associated with mental disorder in developing countries
