It includes a website with useful information, online seminars, and links, a 24-hour hotline for counseling, and in person free and completely confidential sessions (6 sessions) with civilian social workers or mental health providers. The MilitaryOne Source hotline is also available to service members outside the country. * Department of Defense: The Military Child in Transition and Deployment, the DoD website for parents, children, special needs families, installation commanders, and educators includes: - "Tools for Schools" Toolkits for parents, installation commanders and school leaders - Sections on transitions and deployments for children and teens - A state data bank of education requirements and military-friendly legislation - Promising Practices for schools working with military children. * The Military Child Education Coalition (MCEC) is a non-profit organization that identifies the challenges that face the highly mobile military child, increases awareness of these challenges in military and educational communities, and initiates and implements programs to meet the challenges. The MCEC website provides information about their initiatives, training, workshops, and products, a variety of publications, and links to state information on education-related issues. * The Military Impacted Schools Association (MISA) is a national organization representing school districts that serve high concentrations of military children. The organization works to provide a continuum of quality education through funding, legislation, partnerships and programs for military families on the move. MISA also offers training sessions for principals on the use of the DoD’s "Tools for Schools" in their districts. * National Military Family Association (NMFA), “The Voice for Military Families,” is dedicated to providing information to and representing the interests of family members of the uniformed services. In addition to information on deployment, education, family life and health care, NMFA provides valuable links to other useful sites designed to give you the latest information available. They have a “Back to School” section which includes many links to valuable information on education for students and parents, including: - Working with Military Children: A Primer for School Personnel: The Virginia Military Family Services Board prepared a primer for school personnel, and guidance counselors. The primer looks at the four major aspects of military lifestyle: separations or deployments, homecomings, relocation, and crises. The primer includes an activities section designed to help children cope with the adjustments that a military lifestyle can demand. * MilitaryHOMEFRONT is a central up-to-date source for Service members and families to obtain information about all Quality of Life programs and services. * The Military Family Research Institute (MFRI) is a cross-departmental research program housed at Purdue University and funded by the Department of Defense, Office of Military Community and Family Policy. The mission of MFRI is to conduct interdisciplinary, multilevel research that provides insight into the impact of quality of life factors on military members and their families. The Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) administers schools on military installations in the United States and abroad for children of military personnel. Military Scholar provides information about the Defense Commissary Agency's Scholarships for Military Children. The Servicemembers' Opportunity Colleges programs are dedicated to helping service members and their families get college degrees, even as they move. Military students can take courses in their at or near military installations in the US, overseas, and on Navy ships. The Defense Activity for Non-traditional Education Support (DANTES) website offers links to a variety of independent study high school experiences. The American Legion has scholarship opportunities and information, including the Education Assistance Program's scholarship and financial aid guide This 152 page booklet, updated annually, is a complete financial aid reference guide for veterans, veterans' dependents and members of The American Legion family. The Coast Guard Exchange System (CGES) Scholarship Program provides additional financial resources to Coast Guard dependent children embarking on undergraduate studies. The Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation provides financial assistance for higher education to sons and daughters of United States Marines and children of former Marines, with particular attention being given to children whose parent was killed or wounded in action.
