Eight million children under age 5 die every year. Over 3.5 million of those deaths occur in the first month of life. Two-thirds of those babies die within the first week of life. And of those, two-thirds die on the very first day of life. The majority of these deaths are preventable through simple, cost effective public health solutions.
In 2005, the Department of International Health established the International Center for Advancing Newborn Health (ICANH). ICANH produced cutting-edge, community-based research, which demonstrated that village health workers could be trained to work with families to safely deliver babies, prevent disease and respond to serious newborn illnesses. The International Center for Maternal & Newborn Health (ICMNH) will build on the progress of its predecessor by expanding focus to incorporate the health of mothers during the perinatal period. This site will be under renovation as we prepare to launch the new Center.
