Public Health Applications for Student Experience (PHASE)

PHASE is an internship program that enables students to gain insight into how a degree in public health can be applied to careers and experiences in the real world. Too often, students receive little exposure to careers and opportunities available in public health outside of academia. The primary goal of PHASE is to provide students with this important exposure and opportunities for hands-on experiences that are otherwise missing from the academic curriculum.

PHASE meets this goal through a partnership with the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH) and the MidAtlantic Public Health Training Center (MAPHTC) to create internship opportunities for interested students.

In addition to the internship opportunities, PHASE will hold seminars throughout the year featuring guest speakers who will discuss their own careers in public health practice.

The internship is appropriate for masters candidates (MPH, MHS and ScM), but will also be made available to first-year doctoral students. It “requires a student to synthesize and integrate knowledge acquired in course work and other learning experiences and to apply theory and principles in a situation that approximates some aspect of professional practice. It may be used as a means by which faculty judge whether the student has mastered the body of knowledge and can demonstrate proficiency in the required skills.”

For additional information on PHASE Internship Program and to obtain application information visit the PHASE Website.

In addition to the internship offerings, MAPHTC and DHMH work with a group of Hopkins students to offer monthly PHASE seminars, as a part of a PHASE Student Club. Guests are featured from public health practice partners of MAPHTC. These seminars provide students with information about other career opportunities in public health outside of academia. The PHASE seminar sessions draw students, faculty and other practice members from the community, creating a great opportunity for shared learning between academic and practice public health professionals.
