Practical Grant Writing

This half-day training session introduces participants to the essentials of grant writing, and is focused on practical skill-building. After an overview of the entire process, specific attention is paid to the following key areas:

  • analyzing the RFA
  • preparing the executive summary
  • writing S.M.A.R.T. (short-term, measurable, achievable, realistic, time-framed) objectives
  • integrating evaluation into the proposed work plan

A hands-on exercise allows participants to review documents from foundations that award community grants. Specifically, participants answer questions about funding levels, funding areas, eligible applicants, the grant application process and how to obtain information about funding opportunities. The session ends with a brief discussion of how to critique one’s own application prior to submission.
