Designing Effective Messages: Different Audiences, Different Challenges

This half day skill-building session focuses on the critical issue of effective communication. The training begins with a discussion of why we should use theories when planning programs and program messages. This is illustrated at two levels:

  • Individual Level: Stages of Change Model
  • Community Level: Community Organization Model

Next, participants complete an application exercise on using a planning model (and theories) to inform community programs. The planning model illustrated is social marketing.

The final component is assessing the "Messenger". Are our messengers (messages and message communicators) doing what they need to do?
