Dear Colleagues, As you know, our School is working hard on several fronts to respond to the disaster created by Hurricane Katrina. In addition to contributing faculty experts to assess the public health impact, we are welcoming students from Tulane University whose lives were disrupted at the very beginning of the academic year. So far, we have received more than 60 inquiries from Tulane students. They are being accepted on a case-by-case basis as special students. Additionally, some students may enroll in our distance learning program. Information for Tulane students about enrolling as a special student is available via a link on our website. Many of our alumni, faculty, students and staff are generously offering support and temporary lodging for these students. I have spoken to Pierre Buekens, the dean of the Tulane School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, and he asked me to relay his personal and heartfelt thanks for our efforts. His assessment is that Tulane will be able to resume courses in January at the University of Texas in Houston. He thinks that a shortage of student housing will delay returning to New Orleans. Those of you who have been through a natural disaster, as have I, know how disorienting and disturbing it is. I know that I can count on all of you to make our new students feel at home.
