Improvement in workplace safety and health is considered one of the greatest public health achievements of the twentieth century. Yet this century also brings new challenges for the field of occupational injury prevention. Although the number of workers in some settings, such as manufacturing and mining, has declined over the last decade, 16,000 workers are injured and 20 workers die from a workplace injury each day. Faculty research in the occupational setting includes some of the first work examining the relationship between obesity and injury risks. Workplace support for domestic violence survivors is a new area or research for Center faculty. Another emerging area of research is how to best address the health promotion needs of firefighters, including injury prevention.
