Throughout the world, injuries have become a major public health problem resulting in over five million deaths annually. Overall, injuries represent 12 percent of the global burden of disease. Motor vehicle injuries alone cause over a million deaths each year and rank ninth among the leading contributors to disability-adjusted life years. By 2020, projections indicate that motor vehicle injuries will increase in rank to the third leading cause of global disease burden.
Center faculty collaborate with researchers in many parts of the world. Projects underway in low- and middle-income countries include childhood drowning, burn prevention, improving traffic enforcement, strengthening emergency response, and training health professionals in injury prevention and control. New injury prevention scholars are being trained through an international training grant with Aga Khan University.
