Our Leadership

Andrea Carson Gielen, ScD, ScM is the current director of the Center for Injury Research and Policy and Professor in the Department of Health Behavior and Society. Dr. Gielen's research interests are in the development and evaluation of community- and clinic-based programs that address health behavior problems affecting women and children, primarily among low-income families in urban areas. The application of behavioral sciences to childhood injury control and domestic violence prevention programs, and the relationship between violence and HIV risk are areas of special focus.

Jon Vernick, JD, MPH is the current deputy director of the center and Associate Professor in the Department of Health Policy and Management.  Mr. Vernick's research focus has been on the use of law and legal interventions to further public health and injury prevention goals.  He has concentrated on the ways in which science, law, regulation and litigation can work together to reduce the incidence and severity of injuries, particularly those caused by firearms, motor vehicles and other consumer products.
