Research

The Johns Hopkins Center for Injury Research and Policy supports a theme of Science Informing Program and Policy in Injury Control: Meeting the Challenges of the 21st Century

Susan Baker

Conducting high quality research that informs the establishment of programs and policy for the control of injuries and their consequences has been, and remains, the highest priority for the Center.  The Center is also committed to the application of this research through professional practice, and the integration of research and practice with the education of future research scientists and practitioners in the field.

Importance of Injury Research

• In the United States, injury is the #1 cause of death from age 1 thru age 44

• 50 million Americans suffer non-fatal injuries every year

• Injuries cost the United States $406 billion annually

• Every day 16,000 people around the world die from injuries

• Traffic injuries are projected to be the 3rd leading cause of death and disability in the world in 2020

These facts underscore the new and ongoing challenges and opportunities that face us as we move forward with our work into the 21st century.  While it was gratifying that motor vehicle safety and safer workplaces were recognized by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as two of the 10 greatest public health achievements of the last century, our successes in controlling the incidence and consequences of injury have been uneven.  We are still far from meeting many of the injury-specific 2010 health objectives, and injury remains the fourth leading cause of death over all ages. We continue to face many challenges that can best be solved by continuing research, translation of that research into policies and programs, and education and training.

Center research includes foundational studies, intervention development and evaluation, as well as dissemination research. High priority thematic areas include translation, older adults, disparities, injury problems around the world (especially in low and middle income countries), and post trauma interventions and outcomes.
