Each year, the Civil Justice Foundation honors one or more Community Champions at the Breakfast of Champions. Community Champions are honored as outstanding consumer advocates who demonstrate a compassionate commitment to injury prevention and who have performed extraordinary work to preserve the right to justice for injured consumers. In July of 2007, the Johns Hopkins Center for Injury Research and Policy was honored for its long commitment to the reduction and treatment of Injuries. The Center received a grant from the Civil Justice Foundation in 1987 to research the efficacy of age labeling of toys. Center research revealed that the warning label on toys – “not for children under 3 years” - was misunderstood by adults who frequently purchased toys that contained choking hazards. As a result of these data and testimony to federal regulators, toy manufacturers now have clear, standard language about choking hazards and age appropriateness on all toys sold in the United States. Changing product labeling and clarifying the prevention message has significantly reduced children’s risk of choking. |
