Growth through Partnerships:  Looking Back & Moving Forward
20th Anniversary Celebration

Governor Proclamation

On December 6, 2007 at the Tremont Plaza Baltimore, on the occasion of the center's 20th anniversary year, the Center for Injury Research and Policy (the Center) gathered with its injury prevention partners to celebrate 20 years of accomplishments in partnership, leadership, and advocacy.

At the event, Dr. Andrea Gielen, director of the Center, underscored the importance of the Center's collaborative partners.  "During this anniversary year, because we cannot achieve our vision of a safer world alone, we ask everyone to join us as we recommit ourselves to addressing the urgent public health problem of injury."

In addition to welcoming remarks by Dean Michael Klag, the Center’s Deputy Director Jon Vernick introduced each of the former Center directors – Dr. Ellen MacKenzie, Professor Stephen Teret, and Professor Susan Baker – who shared their reflections on the Center’s history and future.

John M. Colmers, Maryland Secretary of Health and Mental Hygiene (pictured here with Dr. Gielen) presented the Center with a proclamation from Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley's Office.  The proclamation announced December 6, 2007 as Center for Injury Research and Policy Day in Maryland and urged Marylanders to recognize the contributions of injury and violence prevention research, teaching, and service programs.

Assistant Deputy Director in Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon's Office, Janie McCullough, also attended and presented a citation to the Center in honor of its contributions to the civic welfare of the Baltimore community.

Maryland Institute College of Art students created a compilation of testimonials, stories, and images conveying the impact the Center has had on the lives of individual children and families over the last twenty years.  The prototype of this compilation was unveiled at the event, and will be featured on the Center's website in Spring 2008.
