Brief description:  HIV positive residents of Bangkok's Klong Toey Slum community who have a history of drug use are less likely to be able to access HIV treatment, are eligible for fewer public HIV treatment programs, and have poorer clinical outcomes compared to their community counterparts who have never used drugs.  Significant barriers exist which preclude such populations disproportionately affected by HIV to accessing appropriate treatment programs.

Community Development Workshop: Safe Sex Skills and Knowledge Development among Men who have Sex with Men in Low and Middle Income Countries
Wednesday 21 July,
Stefan Baral, Tudor Kovacs, Daouda Diouf

This session is intended to provide orientation and share experience on how to develop protocol for qualitative services for marginalized groups. A special focus will be put in providing participants with the evidence-base for combination structural and individual level interventions preventing HIV for men who have sex with men in low- and middle-income countries. Given multiple levels of HIV risk, effective interventions for men who have sex with men must be multi-modal including both individual level interventions  as well as those that address the structural contexts for HIV risk. Little has been published on effective community-led models of HIV prevention for MSM in LMIC including peer education models, health promotion strategies, structured media strategies, and the engagement of key government and religious leaders. Currently, the peer-reviewed evidence for interventions targeting MSM has been mainly produced in high income settings with some key strategic data from lower income settings including Senegal, Peru, and Thailand. This workshop will provide and opportunity to describe lessons learned from developed quality control protocol as well as functional models of the provision of programmes even in difficult social, legal, and economic circumstances. The goal is to share lessons learned from the peer-reviewed literature with that learned from community-led MSM programming in low and middle income countries.

Buprenorphine use is associated with a higher risk profile than methadone use in a community-based cohort of injection drug users in Baltimore, MD
Wednesday, July 21, 2010
Shruti Mehta, Greg Kirk
Brief description: We found that over time buprenorphine uptake relative to methadone uptake has increased in this cohort and was associated with a riskier profile including active injection drug use, incarceration, homelessness suggesting that buprenorphine may expand access to opiate substitution to even riskier users.
