The COA360 is a multidimensional online tool designed to assess the “cultural competency” of a health care organization, rather than a single health care provider, by evaluating how well the institution manages issues related to the diversity of its workforce and its patients. This tool has been developed and scientifically validated by Johns Hopkins researchers. It uses a combination of subjective and statistical data to produce scores for the health care organization based on the 14-item CLAS standards established by the United States Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Minority Health and the six domains of cultural competency identified by the Joint Commission. The advantage of this tool, compared to others, is that it provides a “360-degree view” of the institution from the perspective of a unit’s various constituencies including administrators or managers, health care providers, non-provider staff, clients/patients, and people living in the service area who have not been clients/patients of the healthcare organization.
