Q&As

Can I take the courses in any order?

The Design (390.676) and Quantitative Analysis (390.672) courses are complementary and should be taken in sequence in the same year if possible.  Outcomes (390.675) is best taken after the Design/Analysis sequence, but can be taken without these courses as prerequisites with permission of the instructor.  Ethics and Regulation (390.673) and Database Design (390841) have no prerequisites and may be taken before or after the Design/Analysis sequence.

Can I enroll in one of the SOCI courses without applying to the Certificate Program?

Yes.  Any course may be taken by itself if the instructor agrees your background is appropriate.

Can I receive academic credit (toward a degree) for the SOCI courses?

The Design/Analysis course sequence cannot be taken for academic credit as this series overlaps the curriculum of early biostatistics and epidemiology courses.  The remaining 3 courses can only be taken for academic credit by GTPCI graduate students, for whom these courses were designed.  Exceptions are occasionally made for the Ethics & Regulation course for bioethics graduate students.

As a special student, the JHSPH allows up to 16 hours of credit coursework to be recorded in anticipation of future enrollment in a degree program.  The Ethics, Outcomes, and Database Design courses can be recorded as credits for enrolled JHSPH Special Students, but there is no guarantee that these course credits will be acceptable for transfer to other JHSPH degree programs. Courses previously taken as non-credit cannot be retroactively applied as academic credit to your JHSPH student record.
