Facilities - Our recycling rate is up from 10 percent to 33.8 percent (Q2) with the debut of single-stream recycling on Earth Day 2008.
- In fiscal year 2007, we effected a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions of 5 percent from the previous year.
- Recently changed more than 30,000 lights within our buildings to more energy-efficient and longer-lasting bulbs that reduce energy costs by tens of thousands of dollars and GHG emissions by 890 metric tons annually. Ensured that all lights removed during this project were disposed of safely and in compliance with Health, Safety and Environment policy.
- Commissioned the services of a forensic performance engineering firm to evaluate the School’s mechanical and electrical operating systems. Expanded the survey to include an energy consumption analysis.
- Require on current projects that contractors adhere to waste management plans and provide waste reduction progress reports in order to recycle as much nonhazardous demolition debris and construction waste as possible.
Copy Program and Copy Center - Negotiated a deal with Office Depot that allows the entire University to purchase "green top" (35 percent post-consumer recycled) paper for the same price as "red top" (10 percent recycled content) paper, reducing the demand for the less recycled product.
- Used 35 percent fewer trees for the 112 million copies produced since 2001. Other benefits include a 13 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, a 32 percent decrease in hazardous air pollutants and a 17 percent decline in solid waste and water pollution.
- Returns all program and center toner and ink cartridges to the manufacturer for reuse/recycling.
- Installed over 30 multifunctional (scan, fax, copy, print) devices throughout the school eliminating or preventing the purchase of redundant equipment and reducing energy use.
Food Services - Offers fair-trade coffee and organic teas.
- Recycles all cardboard boxes received with product shipments.
- Supported the “Meatless Monday” campaign and continues to offer vegetarian entrees every day.
Telecommunications - Sold over 1,500 Comdial, ISDN and Norstar phone sets from JHSPH to an equipment reseller after the school migrated to the new Avaya phone system.
- Distributes monthly billing electronically – no more paper bills!
- Collects cell phones and donates them to the House of Ruth.
Center for a Livable Future - Collaborated with Facilities Management to complete the Bloomberg School’s greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory establishing the benchmark by which all efforts to reduce emissions can be measured. JHSPH was the first Hopkins institution to complete a GHG survey and serves as the JHU model for data gathering and computation of this imperative standard.Most hallway lights have been replaced with CFLs.
- Distributed 80 CFLs with instruction sheets for proper disposal at the Focus the Nation event on January 31, 2008.
Office of Communications and Public Affairs - Uses soy inks in the production of JH Public Health magazine.
- Uses an ISO-certified printer with Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Chain of Custody and Green-e certification for print materials.
- Is moving toward greater use of post-consumer recycled paper in print materials.
