A Randomized Trial of Novel TB Preventive Regimens for HIV-Infected Adults in Soweto, South Africa

This is a randomized controlled trial being conducted under an Investigational New Drug Application from the Food and Drug Administration and co-sponsored by USAID and the National Institute of Allergies and Infectious Diseases/National Institutes of Health.

The trial is a four-arm study of alternative preventive therapy regimens for latent TB in HIV-infected adults. The study will provide important information on the most effective therapies to prevent HIV-related TB, and assess the potency of short course regimens containing rifamycins, as well as life-long therapy with isoniazid.

The preliminary estimate of the three-year TB incidence for all study arms is 15.8%, even though all patients are actively treated. Follow-up in the study will continue, and the trial will be completed in 2008.
