Recognizing the urgency to address both maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality in an integrated manner, the Nepal Family Health Program (NFHP) has implemented an integrated pilot intervention — the Community-Based Maternal and Neonatal Care Program (CB-MNC) — in three districts of Nepal: Jhapa, Banke, and Kanchanpur. The pilot project tests the feasibility of the development of an integrated community-based approach to reduce maternal mortality (with a focus on postpartum hemorrage) and neonatal mortality and to provide family planning services for improving birth spacing. The CB-MNC includes interventions that are designed to increase awareness among pregnant women and their families to seek preventive care and on danger signs during antenatal, delivery, and postnatal; strengthen preparation for the delivery and postnatal care of the mother and the child; and increase demand for and utilization of appropriate health services. JHSPH provides technical assistance to the USAID/Nepal-funded NFHP and the Family Health Division/Department of Health Services of the Nepal Ministry of Health to their integrated safe motherhood, neonatal and family planning intervention. The intervention packages have been designed and are currently being implemented by MOH/Nepal and local non-governmental organizations. NFHP provides technical assistance to implement the activities, while JHSPH provides assistance in the design of management information systems and evaluation methodologies.
