Lancet Neonatal Survival Series

Each year almost four million children die in the neonatal period (0-28 days). This is the single largest group of child deaths, yet they have received remarkably little policy attention, partly due to the lack of robust epidemiological information.

Indeed, many global agencies do not list any causes of neonatal death on their standard list of major "child killers." Significant reductions in neonatal deaths are essential to achieve Millennium Development Goal (MDG) 4: to reduce child mortality by two-thirds between 1990 and 2015.

This series of published papers sought to influence international planning to address the burden of neonatal deaths by:

  • Defining where, when, and why neonates die
  • Identifying proven, cost-effective interventions and estimating the number of neonatal deaths that could be averted and at what cost
  • Providing a framework for scaling up newborn care
  • Calling for global action to address neonatal mortality
