Global Tobacco Research Network (GTRN)

In 2002, the Institute for Global Tobacco Control received a grant from NCI to initiate development of the Global Tobacco Research Network (GTRN) to apply systems theory emanating out of its Initiative for the Study of Innovative Systems (ISIS). ISIS was launched to better understand strategies for integrating science and practice and to improve public health outcomes. Leading experts in systems and network theory joined the initiative to help develop a new integrated model of tobacco control.  The successful outcome of this systems approach to tobacco control will include a more efficient use of resources, better communication and cooperation amongst participants, and ultimately, a significant reduction in tobacco use and its related health impacts.

GTRN aims to consolidate the weakly-linked, multi-sectoral community of researchers and organizations involved in the broad spectrum of past, current and future global tobacco control research.

The Mission of GTRN
Enhance research by promoting collaboration and partnerships, sharing information, facilitating technical assistance, and building the global tobacco control research community with the goal of reducing the burden of disease and death caused by tobacco.

GTRN Partnership
A global partnership of individuals who represent major institutions and networks involved in international tobacco research drives GTRN’s conceptual development.

We will have a lot more smokers in the world in 30 years. And that means more disability and death.
