<< Epidemiology and Intervention Research

China

The Fogarty-supported research effort has involved the planning and groundwork for an intervention program at the province level with targeted programs in specific cities and rural districts. The activities have included:

  • A large-scale survey, focus groups and in-depth interviews with community leaders and members
  • Assessment of nicotine levels in public places and homes
  • A community intervention study focusing on achieving smoke-free public places and homes at a community level

The intervention is designed to

  • Increase awareness of the harm to health from passive smoking
  • Decrease exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS) in public places and homes
  • Design and dissemination model program, and implementation strategies and materials to encourage cessation

This current study will provide a model for comprehensive interventions to decrease non-smokers’ exposure to SHS, particularly in rural areas of China and provides a foundation for our proposed intervention study.
