Brazil

In Brazil, the project involves a partnership with the Surveillance and Prevention Department (CONPREV) of the National Cancer Institute (INCA) and builds on a population-wide morbidity and risk factor survey. The project aims to assess relationships of selected risk factors with risks for smoking experimentation, initiation and cessation in adolescents and young adults ages 15-24 years. To do this, a series of policy-relevant research studies were conducted. Two studies are underway to assess smoking in university students and to characterize factors related to smoking initiation in five cities in Brazil:
