Economics

JHSPH is addressing tobacco economics at the country and global levels. Key issues include tobacco and poverty relationships; the financial dimensions of the tobacco growing industry; the health care costs related to tobacco use; and the relevance of tobacco taxation to health system reform.

This economics coordination effort, which includes a strong focus on China, aims to:

1. Pull together and synthesize what is known about tobacco control economics in Bloomberg Initiative countries.

2. Identify and close gaps in knowledge and develop compelling country-specific economic arguments to drive policy change.

3. Develop educational resources in response to identified country-specific capacity building and training needs.
