Successful reproductive health programs are built on a strong research foundation. The Gates Institute currently funds more than 20 major behavioral research studies addressing such questions as how youth confront sexual and reproductive risk (in Vietnam, China, Taiwan, Uganda), how couples manage unplanned pregnancies (in Ghana, Nigeria, India, Uganda, Pakistan, China and Nepal); whether and how contraceptive care should be integrated into HIV voluntary counseling and testing services (in Ethiopia, Malawi, Uganda); and how men view and respond to women’s reproductive health needs (in Ghana, Nigeria and Malawi). By supporting collaborative research, the Institute encourages Johns Hopkins faculty to work in partnership with scientists in developing countries appointed at academic institutions, ministries, nongovernmental organizations and other agencies whose investigations into reproductive health issues carry the promise of translation into actionable policies and programs. Gates Institute–supported study findings are, with increased frequency, being published in peer-reviewed scientific journals, as well as making their way into the program and policy arenas.
