Addis Ababa University, the Bill and Melinda Gates Institute for Population and Reproductive Health and the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, in collaboration with national and international organizations, successfully held a conference to assess the current state of knowledge on prevention and treatment programs in Africa with both reproductive health and HIV/AIDS components. The UN and others have endorsed the integration of reproductive health and HIV/AIDS programs, and most governments have policies encouraging such integration. However, research studies have only recently begun examining the programmatic compatibility and effectiveness of combining these two areas. The conference was also co-sponsored by the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, the Ethiopian Public Health Association (EPHA), the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), International Planned Parenthood (IPPF), and the World Health Organization (WHO).The meeting provided a forum for researchers and policy makers to share findings and to identify future research needs.
