University of Ghana
School of Public Health
Goal: To create a new population and reproductive health department and strengthen graduate training and research in reproductive health

Established in 1994 to address gaps in professional manpower at the Ministry of Health and health care challenges facing the country, the Ghana School of Public Health created five new departments under this grant, including one for Population, Family and Reproductive Health.  Support from the Gates Institute has helped the PFRH department assume a leadership role in MPH and in-service training, faculty research, and programmatic collaboration with other national health institutions.

Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology
Community Health Department

Goal: To build leadership informed by science, facilitate formulation of policies and strategies, facilitate the implementation of innovative and cost-effective solutions and assist in monitoring and evaluating reproductive health programs.

The KNUST-SMS was established in 1975 as Ghana’s second medical school, based on a community-oriented, problem-oriented model. A linkage program with the Gates Institute at Hopkins provides support to 1) build staff capacity, 2) enable faculty exchange between KNUST-SMS and Gates, 3) support collaborative research and advance research training, 4) support local postgraduate training and continuing professional development, 5) support development and improvement of educational infrastructure for learning, teaching, and skills training, and 6) support broadband Internet access and library facilities.
