There is a need for sustained national leadership to address population and reproductive health issues, not only because the latter’s magnitude is so great, but also because the shortage of leadership is most acute in countries lacking the human and financial resources to address these problems. Human investment pays the greatest premium. The capacities to build and innovate, to influence and teach, and to learn and adapt endure for a lifetime. Building the base of talent that can lead policymaking and develop new programs is the most worthwhile investment for positive social change.
The next generation of public and reproductive health leaders will face a more complex set of development challenges and require strong technical preparation. The Gates Institute has supported individual leadership development through scholarships for masters and doctoral degree programs. Today, it focuses on professional training, workshops and leadership forums in Baltimore and abroad.
