My broad area of interest is data utilization for decision-making, especially in reference to routine health information systems and surveillance, with a focus on the experience and perspective of government officials.   My educational background is in political science and global health, and my goal is to bridge the divide between these two disciplines by bringing a political lens to the study of public health decision-making.

For my dissertation research I studied the factors that influenced managers of HIV/AIDS programs in Mexico to use surveillance data when making decisions for their programs.  Other qualitative and mixed methods research experience includes exploring the relationship between alcohol consumption and sexual risk-taking among female sex workers and male migrants in South India; the experience of California local health departments managing antiviral medications during the 2009 H1N1 pandemic; and a policy analysis of the prescribing and procurement practices for antiretrovirals in Mexico.
