Dr Wojciechowski’s principal research interests are in the genetic characterization of eye disease and vision disorders, as well as in the ocular (and visual) manifestations of systemic disease and neurological impairment. His current primary research focuses on large-scale genetic association and sequencing studies of human refractive error. His analyses incorporate genome-level data, measures of environmental exposures, and biological information in order to formulate more comprehensive theories of visual development.
Dr. Wojciechowski also heads the genetic epidemiology component of a family-based study of primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG) in South India. PACG is a visually-devastating, and often painful, condition which can lead to irreversible blindness if not promptly treated.
Dr. Wojciechowski has extensive clinical practice and field experience, having worked as a Doctor of Optometry in various settings. He has practiced in urban areas as well as in remote regions of Northern Canada and Alaska, where he served primarily Native American peoples. He has also directed several humanitarian eye care missions in Central and South America, and in Haiti.
Dr. Wojciechowski has a longstanding interest in clinical psychophysics of high-order visual functions and ophthalmic imaging. These areas of investigation are highly technology-dependent, and have not been comprehensively assessed on a population level . Moreover, the high degree of resolution and large quantities of information obtainable with new technologies should offer greater insight into the biology of ocular disease and visual dysfunction. Hence, Dr. Wojciechowski favors a convergent multidisciplinary approach to understanding normal visual function, the effects of disease on vision and, ultimately, on how visual deficits can impact quality of life.
