My primary interests are in the etiology and prevention of suicidal behaviors and mood disorders among young people. My research focuses on risk for suicide over the course of adolescence and into young adulthood. I am currently involved in a large epidemiological study of suicide attempts among young people originally recruited in Baltimore in first grade and followed into adulthood. This study is focused on the etiology and pathways to suicide attempt. I also lead a study of early trauma exposure, hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis function, and risk for suicide attempts among young people at familial risk for recurrent early-onset depression. I am also involved in a multisite genetic study of young people at-risk for bipolar disorder.
