Dr. Ford applies epidemiologic methods in the context of multidisciplinary research, to understand environmental (social, physical) and biological determinants of racial/ethnic disparities in cancer incidence, detection and survival. In partnership with community-based organizations and residents within diverse neighborhoods in Baltimore City and Prince George's County, he uses the approach of community-based participatory research (CBPR) to develop a program of hypothesis-driven research targeted to the socioeconomically disadvantaged minority-majority populations of these two geographic areas. He has received funding from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and the National Cancer Institute to evaluate behavioral intervention strategies to promote adherence to cancer screening and treatment among individuals from minority and underserved groups. He led a systematic review on barriers and promoters of participation of underrepresented populations in cancer-related trials.
In addition, Dr. Ford is an active pulmonary physician who maintains a longstanding interest in understanding determinants of disparities in respiratory diseases, particularly asthma and lung cancer.
