Dr. Carolyn Cumpsty Fowler, is Assistant Professor and Evaluation Coordinator at the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing and joint appointed to the Department of Health Policy and Management at the Bloomberg School of Public Health. She is a faculty member of the Johns Hopkins Center for Injury Research and Policy and the Mid Atlantic Public Health Training Center (MAPHTC). Dr. Fowler has conducted research into traumatic brain injury in children; child pedestrian injury; psycho-social outcomes from bicycle-related head injury in children; recreational injury; penetrating eye injury; and outcomes from maxillo-facial injury. Currently she is engaged in design and evaluation of community efforts to reduce sleep environment related death in infants.
Her main interest, however, is public health workforce development and translation of theory into practice. Specifically, this involves application of theory in the design, implementation, and evaluation of public health programs at the local level, as well as the development of community capacity to address injury. Dr. Fowler is active in local, national and international training initiatives; she also serves as Professional Development Chair for the Safe States Alliance. Dr. Fowler, has been Faculty Director for the Johns Hopkins Summer Institute "Principles and Practice of Injury Prevention" since 1999; she also developed and teaches the MAPHTC's public health core competency training series. She serves on the National Advisory Committee for Child Death Review, the Maryland Injury Prevention Partnership Advisory Board, and the Baltimore County Child Death Review Team. Dr. Fowler, former chairperson of the Advisory Committee for Injury Prevention and Control at CDC, now serves as Chair of the Board of Scientific Counselors for the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control at CDC.
