The Johns Hopkins Northeast Regional Academic Environmental Public Health Center, formerly known as the Center for Excellence in Community Environmental Public Health Practice, was originally formed in September 2001 with funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Environmental Health to enhance environmental public health practice by: Please click on the above links to learn more about our work over the past three years. Perhaps the Center's greatest undertaking was the creation of the Profile of Maryland Environmental Public Health Practice report, a comprehensive review of county environmental public health practice through an examination of local environmental public health capacities, needs, and future challenges. Based on these findings, recommendations are offered to protect the health and well-being of all Marylanders. The Profile report is currently being distributed to federal, state, and local environmental health practitioners in Maryland and around the county and is being met with rave reviews. Please see the above link to see our most recent press release and quotes from EH professionals in support of the report. In September 2004, the Center was honored and privileged to be re-funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to continue our mission to increase environmental public health capacity at the state and local level. Our mission has expanded to include capacity building throughout the Northeast region with partners from the following states: - Connecticut
- Delaware
- Maine
- Massachusetts
- Hew Hampshire
- New Jersey
- New York
- Pennsylvania
- Rhode Island
- Vermont
- Virginia
- Washington D.C.
We are currently working in three major areas: - Providing outreach to state and local partners through a Northeast Regional Profile project--an expansion of the Profile of Maryland Environmental Public Health Practice report,
- Developing applied research methods to improve health hazard evaluation and investigation, and
- Providing competency-based environmental public health trainings and program evaluation methodologies for and in partnership with environmental public health practitioners.
We would also like to take a moment to pay tribute to Thomas (Tommy) M.
