Sara Holtz, 2007 DrPH graduate, easily recalls that her independent study with Dr. Cindy Stanton was by far her best experience. "We would meet on a weekly basis to discuss topics in maternal health in developing countries such as maternal mortality and morbidity, the role of traditional birth attendants, emergency obstetric care, cesarean delivery, indications for cesarean, global cesarean rates, over medicalization of maternal health, and obstetric fistula. This independent study led to the conception of my dissertation and also engendered my very deep appreciation for the complexity of maternal health.” Sara's thesis was entitled, "Socioeconomic differentials in delivery by cesarean in developing countries". From this work she published three articles on cesarean delivery in Lancet, Birth, and Studies in Family Planning*. "I am eternally grateful to have had this amazing experience to work so closely and intensely with a global expert.” Sara is currently the Senior Technical Officer in Maternal, Newborn Child Health and HIV at Management Sciences for Health (MSH). She notes that her doctoral degree contributes on a daily basis to her current line of work and says, "I use the analytical skills honed while researching and analyzing data for my dissertation. |
