Summer Institute in Mental Health Research

The Summer Institute in Mental Health Research is offered over the course of a two-week period, June 22 - July 2, 2009, by the Department of Mental Health, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

The Institute focuses on methodological and substantive topics in mental health and substance-use research. It is intended for working professionals or students who are interested in developing research expertise in the epidemiology of mental health and substance use disorders, the implementation and evaluation of mental health services and interventions, and/or the methodological issues encountered in mental health research in the population.

After completing the program, participants will understand the latest findings on the occurrences of mental health and substance use disorders in the population and their implications for public mental health; know the steps involved in the scientific, empirical evaluation of services and interventions targeted for mental health outcomes; and acquire the skills and knowledge needed in using the state of the art methodological tools for collecting and analyzing mental health data. 

Where academic credit leading to a degree is desired, students are required to pay the standard school tuition of $815 per credit (2009 rate) for Bloomberg School of Public Health degree students. This rate does not apply to students taking courses for non-credit. The non-credit tuition rate is $400 per credit (2009 rate). No scholarship and/or grant support is available.

General Institute Information

Students are strongly encouraged to register early for the Mental Health Summer Institute. Due to enrollment limits, participants who register after the start of the Institute will be accepted only on a space-available basis, and will be subject to a late registration fee.

The Summer Institute has three registration processes; please choose the option that applies.
1.Johns Hopkins Degree-Seeking Students - To register, please go directly to the ISIS website and choose the course(s) you would like to register for.
2.Non-Johns Hopkins Degree-Seeking Students  - If you want to receive Johns Hopkins academic credit, you should register as a special student limited following the directions that appear on this website.
3.Participants registering as not-for-credit - Please register online

A completed application, along with a full fee payment is required to secure a seat in the course(s) selected. Due to enrollment limits, participants who register late will be accepted on a space-available basis, and will be subject to a late registration fee.

Tuition and Fees
Tuition charges for the Mental Health Summer Institute courses offered for graduate academic credit are as follows:

  • 1-credit, $815
  • 2-credits, $1630
  • 3-credits, $2445

  The registration fees for those registering for the Mental Health Summer Institute courses on a non-credit basis are as follows:

  • 1-credit, $400
  • 2-credits, $800
  • 3-credits, $1200

Financial (tuition) assistance is not available for the 2009 Institute.

Payment Options
Payment options include cash, check or credit card. Online payment by credit card or electronic check is also available. Employees of the University may be eligible to use JHU tuition remission. Sponsored students may pay with a third-party contract.

Credit Card Payments
The University accepts American Express,  MasterCard, Visa and Discover. A student who submits a credit card payment that is declined will be placed on financial hold and may be removed from courses for which he or she is currently registered.

JHU Tuition Remission
Students who are eligible to participate in the JHU Tuition Remission Plan must provide the Tuition Remission Benefit Application in lieu of payment for tuition. Fees are not covered under the Tuition Remission Plan. If the remission does not cover the entire cost of tuition, a student is required to pay the remaining balance. Original remission forms and any additional payment due from the student must be submitted by the payment due date. It is the student’s responsibility to understand and abide by the terms of the Tuition Remission Plan. Please visit the Human Resources webpage to print the Tuition Remission Forms. After the forms are completed, please print them and send to the business office along with a copy of your registration form.

3rd Party Contract
A student must submit a purchase order or contract from his/her employer permitting the school to bill the company for tuition and any associated fees. If the contract does not cover the entire cost of tuition and fees, a student is required to pay the remaining balance by the payment due date. Students who receive payments directly from their employer are required to pay their tuition in full then seek reimbursement from the employer.
