Department of International Health

Social and Behavioral Interventions (SBI)

Faculty in the Social and Behavioral Interventions (SBI) program conduct research and training on the development, implementation and evaluation of social science-based public health interventions. Our work is multidisciplinary in that it draws on theoretical and methodological practices from across the social sciences.

SBI advising faculty are drawn from the SBI, Health Systems and Human Nutrition Programs, and collaborate on research with various research groups in the Department including the Center for American Indian Health, the Center for Human Nutrition, and the International Center for Advancing Newborn Health. SBI advising faculty support Master's and PhD degrees in the SBI program, as well as two MPH concentrations: Social and Behavioral Sciences (SBS), and Global Environmental Sustainability and Health (GESH).

SBI faculty have won a number of teaching awards, including two Golden Apple awards. The program has an excellent record of publication by students. Twenty-one master's graduates have published articles based on their Master's internships in the SBI program, 13 as first authors, and there have been 38 articles based on the dissertations of PhD graduates of the program. SBI students are very competitive for awards and funding. In the 2007-8 academic year, awards given to SBI students included a Fulbright grant, Buchbinder award, Nancy Stephens award, NIH Framework for global health awards and nomination to the Delta Omega honor society.

The SBI Program provides leadership in the field of formative research to design more effective behavioral change interventions for primary health care programs in low- and high-income countries. Research by SBI faculty on implementation of behavior change interventions at the household and community levels relates to a range of topics including the following:

  • management of sick children outside of health facilities
  • neonatal and maternal health
  • tropical and vector-borne diseases
  • water and sanitation
  • promotion of exercise and improved diet to reduce rates of obesity, diabetes and other chronic diseases
  • establishment of innovative community-based mental health services and promotion of child development and healthy families in Native American communities
  • understanding factors affecting the effectiveness and sustainability of control programs for malaria, tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS
