Technical Note: Real-Time Results Tracking

Real-Time Results Tracking
Under the Catalytic Initiative to Save a Million Lives, the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) has been supporting and working with IIP-JHU since 2007 to develop, test and apply methods that can capture deaths among children under five for recent periods of 12 months or less.

The aim of the Real-time Results Tracking (formerly known as Rapid Mortality Monitoring – RMM) project is to increase accountability in maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH) programs in low-income countries with weak health systems by working with in-country institutions to

  1. develop, implement and test the accuracy and cost of methods to measure changes in under-five mortality at intervals of one year or less; and
  2. use proven methods to assess the mortality impact of MNCH strategies.

This work responds directly to the recommendations of The UN Commission on Information and Accountability for Women's and Children's Health, and can inform the “Agenda for Action.” The first recommendation of the Commission was to strengthen the systematic tracking of vital events; the second was to track a set of 11 standard indicators for monitoring progress, including under-five mortality; and the third was to increase the integrated use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). The RRT project will contribute to all three of these areas.
