Applications to the PhD programs are considered by a faculty admissions committee which reviews a range of criteria and considers the overall balance of each applicant's qualifications. A strong undergraduate or previous graduate-level academic record is expected. Scores from the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) less then five years old are required for all applicants regardless of academic or professional background. The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is required for all applicants from countries/education programs where English is not the offiical language. The minimum requirements for TOEFL are 250 for computer-based or 100 for the Internet-based test. The minimum requirement for IELTS is a score of 7. The personal statement is a central element to the application, as it is an opportunity to explain your commitment to the field of public health, as well as specific program or research interests. Applicants should also include a curriculum vitae (C.V.) or resume. Beginning with applications for the 2010–11 academic year, applicants who will be submitting documentation from post-secondary institutions outside of the U.S. will be required to have their documents evaluated by an external credential evaluation agency. Please be sure to only use a credentialing agency that will include a copy of the transcript or marks sheet in their credentialing report. If a copy of the transcript or marks sheet is not included in the credentialing report, the document will be considered insufficient for admissions review. If the credentialing report does include a copy of the transcript or marks sheet, we will use the documentation in the review of an application; however, they cannot replace the official academic records requirement for enrollment purposes. If you are accepted for admission, a final official transcript or marks sheet showing final course grades, the degree awarded, and the date of degree conferral must be submitted prior to enrolling. If you have already completed your degree, we strongly recommend that you request two sets of official transcripts/marks sheets at the time of application. Please submit one set to the credentialing agency, which will be used for the application review. If you are admitted, you may submit the second unopened set in order to satisfy official JHSPH transcript contingencies.
While the school does not endorse one particular evaluation agency, the following three agencies will meet the evaluation requirements and submit copies of transcripts/mark sheets with the evaluation.
