The application deadline for the MHA program is February 1; however, it is recommended that you apply in the fall as the application review process begins in November. An interview is not required as part of the application process, however, an interview may be required prior to an admissions decision. If it is not possible to schedule an on-site interview, a formal phone interview should be scheduled with one or two of the program directors. Either test is appropriate for our program. The minimum scores are at the 55%; however, the average scores in the quantitative and verbal sections are between 70-75%. No, you may apply directly from undergraduate school. If you are applying directly from undergraduate school, the admissions committee will look at your resume closely for leadership potential as well as relevant volunteer or paid part-time work experience. An undergraduate course in microeconomics is recommended. The program enrolls approximately 18-22 full-time students each year. Although our class size is relatively small, it is our goal to enroll a diverse group of students from many different backgrounds.
Once we have received a completed application, we can connect you via e-mail with a current student or alumnus. Additionally, the School hosts an open house in the fall and admitted students are invited to a visitor's day in early spring. Both of these events give you an opportunity to meet with faculty, administrators and current students.
The MHA, like the MBA, involves the development of business management and financial knowledge and skills; however, the MHA focuses and applies these skills exclusively to the health care domain. The MHA is a better fit if you are confident that you want to work in the health care delivery industry. The MBA provides opportunities in a wider range of sectors; the MHA tends to open more doors in healthcare. What distinguishes our MHA from MBA programs, even those that concentrate in healthcare, is our strong connection with the medical campus and our 11-month field placement. The School of Public health is located on the medical campus along with the Schools of Medicine and Nursing and Johns Hopkins Hospital. By the time our students graduate, they have had numerous education and informal interactions with clinicians, hospital administrators and medical faculty. Many of our students complete their field placement within Hopkins. The full-time Master of Public Health program at the Bloomberg School of Public Health is an intensive eleven month program that begins in July of each year. The curriculum introduces core concepts of public health early in the program; students then customize their program of study to meet their individual or career goals. Admission to the MPH program at Hopkins requires two years of post-baccalaureate health related work experience or a doctoral degree in a field underlying public health. The Hopkins MPH prepares its students to face public health challenges through multidisciplinary approaches that apply the latest scientific knowledge, common sense and teamwork to important health problems. The program culminates in a capstone experience where students apply their knowledge to a public health problem. The MHA program is designed specifically for students who want an accelerated degree program that allows them to apply the conceptual and analytical skills learned in the first year to their eleven month field placement in a health-care or related organization. The first year is the didactic year in which students enroll in approximately 6-7 courses per term. The second year is the field placement year in which students are working full-time within a healthcare or healthcare related organization. There are three courses required in the 2nd year; they are offered via the Internet as our students may be working anywhere in the U.S.
Because of the heavy course load in the first year and the number of extra seminars, field trips and activities planned for MHA students, there is not much of an opportunity for electives.
The MHA program is designed as a full-time on-campus program. Exceptions to the full-time requirement have been made for students in the Baltimore area who are already working in a managerial type position within a healthcare organization.
The program office has a list of organizations that routinely seek MHA students for a field placement. Additionally, if a student is interested in pursuing a field placement within a particular organization in which a relationship is already established, the program office will assist students in obtaining their own field placements.
Interviews are conducted between January and March; students typically know of their assignments by late March.
