In 2009, the Institut Municipal d’Assistencia Sanitaria, now the Parc de Salut Mar, (Mar Health Park) with the collaboration of the Universitat Pompeu Fabra and the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, established a similar relationship with the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions to create the first Fall Institute focusing on issues related to health policy and medical care. Six very successful workshops offered in 2009 have led to continued collaboration. For the Fall 2011, six academic credit eligible courses will be offered.

The academic components of Parc de Salut Mar are the Universitat Pompeu Fabra and the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF) is a research-oriented academic center and one of the founding institutions of the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park, one of the best known biomedical research centers in southern Europe. It has two undergraduate programs, one on Human Biology and another on Medicine (in collaboration with the Autonomous University of Barcelona); ten masters degree programs and one PhD program. The Universitat Pompeu Fabra is highly recognized as a center of excellence in its teaching and its research. The Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) is one of the best known universities in Spain and in Europe. Its reputation attracts many foreign students (one third of its undergraduates are non-Spaniards). The medical faculty are at the center of the University, having a very innovative approach to clinical medicine. It is also one of the best medical research and teaching academic centers in Europe.
