Department of Behavior, Health and Society

Our Research

HBS emphasizes theoretical, methodological and applied studies in three signature areas:

  • social determinants of health, and structural- and community-level interventions to improve health
  • health communication and health education
  • behavioral and social aspects of genetics and genetic counseling

Learn about The Lighthouse, a community-based research unit that focuses on disease prevention and health promotion among urban disadvantaged populations, especially in Baltimore City.

Learn about the Center for Communication Programs (CCP). CCP uses communication to save lives, improve health, and enhance well-being.  With a staff of approximately 450, CCP is active in more than 30 countries worldwide as well as in Baltimore.

Learn about Mental Health Communication Skills for Pediatric Primary Care.  HBS faculty recently completed an NIMH-funded study that taught pediatricians, family physicians, and nurse practitioners how to improve their skills talking with families about children’s mental health concerns. Trained clinicians had a positive impact on distress among mothers and were able to improve functioning among minority children. You can see sample training materials in English and Portuguese.  A web-based version is currently being pilot tested with colleagues at Wake Forest University. For more information contact HBS faculty member Larry Wissow.
