Faculty and guest-lecturer seminars are sponsored on a regular basis. Student research-proposal seminars are held every Friday; these seminars are designed to provide a forum for department-wide presentation and discussion of proposed research. Each doctoral student must present their proposed research prior to sitting for the oral exams. These seminars are open to the public. _________________________________________ Most areas of concentration sponsor journal clubs as a format for dialogue on current research topics between and among faculty and students. In general, the format is based on student (or faculty) volunteers presenting and facilitating discussion of a newly published epidemiologic study. The journal clubs benefit students in a number of ways: as preparation for the comprehensive exams, as experience in public speaking, in exposure to current research, in learning critical thinking and logic related to the scientific method, and in providing opportunities for students and faculty to interact. Students are encouraged to contact the faculty for further information and to sign up for mailing lists. Journal club meetings are announced via email and flyer. Journal clubs and seminars are open to the entire Hopkins community. _________________________________________ The Epidemiology Student Organization (ESO) comprises all master's, doctoral, and postdoctoral students in the Department of Epidemiology. Its mission as a faculty- and administration-independent organization is to promote the professional development of students in the Department and to act as an advocate for student needs. This is accomplished by working with faculty, administrators, and other student organizations in the School. ESO seeks to create an environment that encourages discussion, student interaction, and networking. |
