The Environmental Microbiology Laboratory in the Johns Hopkins University Center for Water and Health is currently seeking an intern to assist in the biochemical characterization of pollutant degrading microbes. Completion of basic coursework in microbiology/biochemistry is essential and practical experience in microbiology/biochemistry is preferred. Job functions include preparation of microbiological media, maintenance of pure and mixed cultures, and biochemical characterization of microbial degradation potential toward environmental pollutants. You will be performing experiments semi-independently under the supervision of a PhD student. This is a great opportunity to gain hands-on experience with cutting-edge technology, and potentially co-author a scientific paper before entering graduate school. Interested applicants willing to make a 9-month commitment should submit a resume and cover letter to Dr. Halden’s research group (haldenlab@jhu.edu).
2. Undergraduate Research Internship: Mass Spectrometry/Proteomics
The Environmental Microbiology Laboratory in the Johns Hopkins University Center for Water and Health is looking for an intern to work on the proteomic identification of microorganisms. This project involves analyzing bacteria, viruses and protozoa using cutting-edge mass spectrometric and proteomic techniques. You will be involved in all aspects of the project, from growing the cultures, through sample preparation to data acquisition and analysis. Good analytical skills are essential and prior experience with mass spectrometry is preferred. Basic skills in microbiology such as culture maintenance, aseptic techniques and cell enumeration are a plus. This is a wonderful opportunity to be introduced to the rapidly growing field of proteomics. Interested applicants willing to make a 9-month commitment should submit a resume and cover letter to Dr. Halden’s research group (haldenlab@jhu.edu).

4. Ph.D. and M.S. Research/Teaching Assistantships
We accept Ph.D. and M.S. students into the water program
of the Division of Environmental Health Engineering at the beginning of each
academic year. Apply early to get the best shot at the limited resources and
to compete for one of the prestigious fellowships. Are you interested in
viruses and other microbial pathogens? Don't forget to pay a visit to Dr. Kellogg Schwab's webpage. Our research groups have frequent interactions and
we collaborate on various projects.
