The mission of the Division of Occupational and Environmental Health is to prevent disease and injury related to occupational and environmental stressors, and to promote health among individuals and in populations through research, professional practice and teaching. Division faculty members are involved in a wide range of research projects, commonly characterized by studies of disease etiology, prevention or control in human populations. Research activities include a prominent focus on occupational, environmental and molecular epidemiology; biomarkers and their development; validation and demonstration of utility for prevention; development, validation and effectiveness of medical surveillance activities; occupational and environmental health policy; evaluation of the health effects of global environmental change, urban sprawl and the built environment; interaction between genetic factors and occupational and environmental exposures in causing disease; the impact of health conditions on ability to work; and causes, risk factors, diagnosis and treatment of occupational and environmental diseases and injuries. The Occupational and Environmental Health Nursing (OEHN) program prepares nurses for positions in private sector organizations as well as academia, consulting and government agencies. Graduates fill a unique and growing need for nurses who wish to apply their professional skills to program management, research and problem-solving to prevent adverse effects of workplace and community exposures on human health. Degrees are offered at the doctoral and master’s levels. This program, funded by the National Instutute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) within the Johns Hopkins Education Research Center, graduates nurses with MPH, MSN/MPH, PhD and DrPH degrees in the field of occupational and environmental health. For additional information, contact Dr. Sheila Fitzgerald, OEHN program director at sfitzger@jhsph.edu. The Occupational and Environmental Medicine Residency (OEMR) program is a two-year program designed to prepare physicians for a career in the specialty of occupational and environmental medicine. The OEMR includes an academic year to complete the MPH degree, followed by a practicum year of rotations at key training sites in the Mid-atlantic region. The program, established in 1978, is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education and prepares physicians for board certification by the American Board of Preventive Medicine.
